Fantasy Football Trade Values: Why Your League Settings Matter

Why league size, starting lineups, and team direction change every ranking

Every fantasy football trade chart has the same problem. It has to pretend our leagues are all basically the same.

A quarterback can be replaceable in a league with 10 teams and one starting quarterback, then become one of the most valuable assets in a superflex league with 14 teams. A tight end means more in tight end premium. A good running back becomes harder to replace when every team can start three or four of them.

The player did not change. The league around the player did.

That was the problem I wanted to solve with ffwrapped Player Values. Instead of giving everyone the same list, the rankings start with the settings and rosters from your Sleeper or ESPN league.

Why Generic Trade Values Break Down

Most trade charts assume a default format. Usually that means 12 teams, one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, and a flex. That is a reasonable baseline, but it may not look much like your league.

The biggest differences are:

  • League size
  • Starting lineup requirements
  • Standard, half PPR, or full PPR scoring
  • One or two starting quarterbacks, including superflex
  • More flex spots
  • Redraft or dynasty format
  • Tight end premium

Even two leagues with the same scoring can have different player markets. If one starts two wide receivers and the other starts four, the useful receiver pool disappears much faster in the deeper league. The top receivers become more valuable because the alternatives are worse.

This is why I think a trade value should answer two questions: How much will the player score, and how hard will that production be to replace?

How ffwrapped Calculates Player Value

In redraft leagues, ffwrapped starts with the projected points for every rostered player. During the season, it uses the remaining weekly projections. After the season, it can use the completed results instead. The projection also matches the league's standard, half PPR, or PPR format.

Raw points are not enough, though. If we stopped there, quarterbacks would dominate most rankings simply because they score the most points. That would make sense in superflex, but it would look ridiculous in many one quarterback leagues where a decent replacement is still sitting on waivers.

The next step is estimating replacement level at each position. ffwrapped uses the number of teams and the actual starting slots in the league to estimate how many quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends are needed each week. Flex and superflex spots add demand to the positions that can fill them.

Once there is a replacement point, the basic calculation is simple:

Value over replacement = projected points - replacement points

Suppose a quarterback projects for 285 points and the next realistic option projects for 275. That starter gives you 10 points over replacement.

Now suppose a receiver projects for 220 points and the replacement receiver projects for 170. The receiver gives you 50 points over replacement, even though the quarterback scores more total points.

That second number is what I care about. It shows the production a manager cannot easily find somewhere else.

ffwrapped turns that advantage into a value from 0 to 100. The best player in that league sets the top of the scale. Players at or below replacement can fall to zero. Kicker and defense are discounted because those positions are usually easier to stream.

Why Superflex Changes Quarterback Value

Superflex is the clearest example of league settings changing a market.

In a normal one quarterback league, 10 or 12 quarterbacks start each week. The waiver wire may still have a few reasonable options, so the gap between a starter and replacement can be small.

In a superflex league with 12 teams, as many as 24 quarterbacks can enter starting lineups. The replacement point moves much farther down the position. A quarterback who looked ordinary in the first league can suddenly offer a huge advantage.

I like this approach because it does not need a random "superflex bonus." Quarterbacks become more valuable naturally because the league requires more of them.

The same thing happens elsewhere. Start more receivers and receiver scarcity rises. Add another flex and the replacement line moves deeper into the player pool. Add more teams and good alternatives get harder to find everywhere.

Dynasty Is a Different Question

Redraft value is mostly a question about production during the current season. Dynasty value has to consider what a player may be worth next year and beyond.

For dynasty leagues, ffwrapped blends:

  • Long term market value from dynasty average draft position
  • Production value based on projections and replacement level

A contender puts more weight on current production because points this season can turn into a championship. A rebuilder cares more about age, future opportunity, and resale value. The balanced setting sits between them.

Dynasty settings also change which market data is relevant. Superflex leagues use ADP meant for two quarterback formats, while tight end premium can increase the value of tight ends.

There is no single correct dynasty ranking for every manager. That is part of what makes dynasty trades interesting. Two teams can value the same player differently and both be right.

Two Players Are Not Always Worth the Sum of Their Values

We have all seen the offer where someone adds two bench players together and insists they equal a star. The math should not work that way.

If a manager trades one elite starter for two useful players, both incoming players count as assets. But the second player is only valuable to the extent that the manager can start them or use the added depth. A player who sits on the bench every week does not replace the elite production that left the lineup.

ffwrapped applies diminishing weight to additional players in a trade package instead of adding every value at full strength. The most valuable player counts the most, and each additional player contributes less.

That does not mean every two for one trade is bad. If the receiving team has two weak starting spots, the package may be exactly what it needs. It just means depth should not automatically be treated like elite production.

Turning Values Into Trade Ideas

A normal trade calculator evaluates an offer you already built. I wanted Trade Finder to start one step earlier.

The last part matters. Two packages can have similar values while making one roster worse. A useful trade should give both managers a reason to consider it, so suggestions need to improve both projected lineups.

The Number Is a Starting Point

The values should not make the decision for you. A manager may need a healthy starter this week. A rebuilding team may prefer one young player over three older ones. Some leagues refuse to trade quarterbacks, while others move them constantly.

The number helps explain the market. Your league still decides the price.
